How do I build a web design portfolio?

Could anyone offer me advice on how to create and build a web design portfolio to attract potential employers? For example, i am competent with the Adobe suite/HTML/E-Commerce etc-so was thinking of designing 2-3 sites with just one page showing my design skills, 2-3 more interactive websites (e.g. 3-5 pages) and an E-Commerce site. Would this be enough/the right way of going about things to get work?

The company I used (iConvex.com) to develop my site has a great portfolio listed on their site.

Is there graphic design book or website that shows good and bad examples?

Can anyone recommend me a book or a website or anything else that gives you good and bad examples of graphic design and web design? It’s even better if it has notes about what’s good and what’s bad about a design. Thanks!

http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/ and http://www.datadial.net/blog/index.php/2009/06/09/website-fail-30-web-designs-that-will-hurt-your-eyes/ are always good to look at.

My first attempts at web design weren’t quite as bad as some of those and even those are now thankfully a distant memory and only available when I need a laugh on WayBackMachine.

Web Design Help? Embedding information that is updated (not by me) frequently? What language should I use?

I know a lot of html (I think) and am interested in learning more languages. (css, javascript, etc.) How do I (or how do I learn to) insert data which is updated frequently or constantly. Example: A number of comments on a youtube video. Ten Points. No hate comments, I admit I’m relatively new in the web design world.

Is your example what you actually want to do? (with youtube).

Some websites (twitter for instance) easily allow you to do this. I am not sure about youtube. It may come under the name of API.

Try searching ‘youtube comment feed’ into google and see what comes up – if they let you do it, it will be easy!

Im 16 years old, what kind of businesses are easy and available to do at home? (example: web design)?

Im 16 years old and one of my friends is fairly tech savvy (mostly because he just watched a bunch of tutorial video’s) and now is creating websites for small businesses at home from his mac and charging about 500$ a piece. I have no problem learning how to do something such as this, but i don’t want to copy him or try to steal any of his business. What is a job like this that i can do from home as an intelligent 16 year old?

Do a Freelancer job. They are legit and free to join. You can apply for simple web design project there. Withdraw your money from any ATM which support Master Cards in your country. For legit site list..

What are Browsers? Give different examples of them and how they are used in web design?

^^

A web browser or Internet browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content. Hyperlinks present in resources enable users to easily navigate their browsers to related resources.

Although browsers are primarily intended to access the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by Web servers in private networks or files in file systems. Some browsers can also be used to save information resources to file systems.

Where to find Ads for quick graphic/web design services?

Are there sites where I can find quick graphic design jobs? For example, if someone needed an image edited or a layout…where could I go to find ads like that and get paid through paypal?

There’s lots of sites on the web that allow people to post jobs online for completion.

Elance.com has a Design and Multimedia section where graphic or web design jobs can be picked up.

Guru.com also works in a similar way: people post projects for you to submit tenders for.

99designs.com has a slightly different approach. People who want graphic design work completed submit a brief and you are then free to submit a design into a competition. The person who posted the work then chooses their favourite design and the winner gets paid a prize. This can lead to you doing lots of work that ultimately you don’t get paid for though. Maybe good for building some experience if that’s what you’re after.

What would be good examples of web applications for a portfolio?

I want to create an online portfolio to promote myself to prospective employers. Rather than concentrate on the web design itself, I want to focus more on web applications, ie the programming and coding side. What would be good sample applications to include?

Check out Pixpa, Portfolio Websites for Creative Professionals. They empower you to showcase your work online with ease and style.

They have a EasyStudio Web application in which a user can make & customize lot of changes to suit their needs. You can completely customize it. You also don’t need hosting & can host your site on their domain.

You can check out some sample designs and applications @ http://www.pixpa.com
